Justice Chaplaincy
What is Justice Chaplaincy?
A chaplain is someone who accompanies people as they grapple with issues of meaning and value in their lives. There are chaplains who do this for people in hospitals, prisons, colleges, corporate environments and other settings, and there is a new field called Movement Chaplaincy or Justice Chaplaincy. I am a trained Movement Chaplain and offer spiritual companionship to organizers, activists and faith leaders who are working for social and climate change. I understand justice movement history and am attuned to the sacred, painful, and celebratory needs of our justice movements and their leaders.
Chaplaincy and Companionship for You
Sessions are one hour and begin with a practice of centering, grounding and releasing all distractions. From this place, we create a sacred space where we listen deeply to your inner teacher.
You are invited to share questions or situations into this space. These are not “yes or no” questions; they are open inquiries that explore possibilities. For activists and organizers like you, they may include:
Together, we will listen, feel and notice. Who are the questions or situations asking you to be? Who is your soul asking you to be? We will engage in meditation, visualization, ritual and somatic practices as we feel led.
Sessions are held by phone or video (using Zoom).
When you book your first session, I will send you the Agreement. You can agree, or you may suggest changes which can be incorporated. More about me.

- Your stories of success and celebration, struggle and defeat
- Your feelings - the grief, the joy, the frustration, the waning compassion for folx who "don't get it" - all the feelings
- Any signs of burnout, stress, secondary or vicarious stress/trauma, compassion fatigue that need to be released through somatic or meditative practices. (Note: Our work will be spiritual not psychotherapy.)
- The role of your spiritual life in movement work - how you center wholeness and healing (your own and that of others) in your work
- How you tap your deepest sources of inspiration, wisdom and replenishment so you can bring vision and wholeness to your work
- Your spiritual practices
- How you offer a healing presence to the planet, those who are marginalized and the systems that oppress
- Whatever else comes up about your work and life

Movement Chaplaincy
If your movement is planning a public action, I am trained, certified and available to offer spiritual, emotional, relational and practical holistic care. During direct actions, government advocacy events and any time people gather together to speak truth to power, I:
- Provide accompaniment and witness during notable, intense or traumatic times
- Meet people “where they are”, listen, hold space for emotions, laments, tears, pain and struggle
- Center & maintain a focus on the spiritual, emotional, relational and physical needs (like warmth, thirst, touch, eye contact) of individuals and communities engaged in movement work
- Contribute tools, texts, practices, rituals and activities for spiritual and emotional healing and resilience to organizations, actions and community work
- Develop and co-create liturgies, ceremonies, prayers, celebrations, laments for protests, rallies, meetings or gatherings of any kind
- Serve as a resource for spiritual, inspirational and relevant material for remembering, centering and grounding
- De-escalate, mediate and provide relational support during times of emotional intensity
- Provide and/or coordinate non-medical emotional, spiritual and physical support before, during and after nonviolent direct action
Movement Chaplaincy is offered for a donation.
